Structural Stabilization,
Exterior Restoration, and
Interior Restoration/Theater Upgrades

The building is a unique example of the Cape May Historic District’s earliest vernacular architecture. Built in 1853 as the Presbyterian Church, it exemplifies the best of the local carpenter-designed architecture. In addition, the Greek Revival influenced building sports a unique “Belvedere” that evokes eastern or oriental imagery due to its unusual brackets and dome.

Cape May Stage is an important component of the Cape May Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, due to the fact that it helps promote cultural tourism, the second most important economic activity in New Jersey.

Structural stabilization of the building was completed in 2005, which included restoration of the Belvedere, repair and reinforcement of original heavy timber trusses, and replacement of the roof. Exterior restoration of the building and improvement of dressing room facilities will be completed in 2006. The final phase of work for the theater will complete the theaters rehabilitation and include new seating, lighting, interior finishes and improved landscaping.

The project has received funding from the New Jersey Historic Trust and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.
