Historic Structures Report In 1890, Publisher Henry Ivison constructed “The Castle” in Rutherford, NJ. The 25 room mansion was designed by W. H. Miller in the French Chateau Style and has many decorative features including cylindrical towers, gabled dormers, stained glass windows, decorative clay tile roofs, brownstone walls, ornate interior plaster reliefs, decorative painted friezes and grand fireplaces. “Iviswold Castle” was acquired by Felician College from Farleigh Dickinson University in 1997. The College recognized the need to preserve and restore this historic structure and make it the centerpiece of their Rutherford Campus. HBA prepared a Historic Structures Report in 2001. This was followed in 2002 by interior selective removal to expose all the original historic fabric that had been concealed by temporary alterations completed in the 1970s. In 2004, Felician College proceeded with the exterior restoration of the Castle. The exterior restoration work included the replacement of the complex Ludowici clay tile roof, structural framing repairs, masonry cleaning, restoration with mortar replication, restoration of windows and decorative metal railings. In January of 2006 HBA began a feasibility study for the interior restoration, which is proposed to commence in 2007. A total of 27,000 square feet will be upgraded to accommodate a new Campus Center used by students, administration and admissions creating the primary building on the Rutherford Campus. Felician College successfully obtained an HSM grant in 2001 for the Historic Structures Report and a Capital Grant in 2002 for the interior selective removal work and exterior restoration. |
