Preservation Plan
The purpose of this Preservation Plan was to look at and address the “big picture” and to provide direction to the Town of Swan’s Island and the Light House Committee on the recommended work and adaptive use of the Burnt Coat Harbor Light Station complex of buildings and surrounding landscape. The report included six main components, an architectural evaluation with recommendations for the restoration and renovation of the buildings’ exteriors, an assessment of the interior conditions and recommendations for the Keeper’s Dwelling, a site improvement plan, recommendations for educational material on the history of the light station, a maintenance plan and recommendations for phasing the restoration work with a detailed cost estimate for each phase.
This was a planning document designed to assist in planning for continued long-term good stewardship of the buildings and landscape. It was also designed to assist with fundraising and with appropriate and timely restoration work.
The Historic Preservation Plan has been financed with a grant from the Hart Family Fund for Small Towns, administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and funds provided by the Virginia Wellington Cabot Foundation and the Friends of the Swan’s Island Lighthouse. The Maine Historic Commission reviewed the work and provided additional support. The project was completed and presented by HBA to the Town in August 2007.
